Applications open March 1 and close at midnight on May 31. Introduction The Dr. Joseph L. Henry Scholarship commemorates the life and work of Dr. Joseph L. Henry (May 2, 1924 – October 11, 2011), a distinguished figure in dental education and leadership. Dr. Henry served as Dean of Howard University College of Dentistry and later as Dean of Harvard School of Dental Medicine. A consistent valedictorian throughout his education, he completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University, earned his dental degree from Howard University, and received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois—all before turning 27. Overview of the Award - Number of awards: Up to five recipients. - Eligible recipients: Incoming first-year dental students. - Award amount: $2,000 per year. - Renewal: Renewable for up to four years. Renewal is conditional upon submitting an annual renewal application and demonstrating continued academic excellence and student leadership. - Purpose: Recognizes students who demonstrate strong academics, meaningful extracurricular involvement, and the potential for academic and professional distinction, reflecting Dr. Henry’s commitment to excellence, perseverance, and leadership. Eligibility Criteria To be considered, applicants must: - Be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status. - Have been accepted to a U.S. dental school accredited by ADA/CODA. - Have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. - Show evidence of community service that reflects respect and selflessness. Additional requirement for awardees: - Within 30 days of notification, scholarship recipients must provide a written quotation and a 30-second video expressing their appreciation. These materials may be used on the NDAF website and other publications. Application Requirements Applicants must submit all of the following items: 1. Official undergraduate transcript from your college or university. 2. A professional headshot. 3. A personal request letter (maximum 500 words) that addresses: - Financial need, - Academic accomplishments, - Community service, - Relevant personal qualities and experiences that qualify you for the scholarship. 4. A letter from your SNDA national or local president confirming your current membership status. 5. Three letters of recommendation: - One from the Dean or Chair of your undergraduate degree program, - One from an undergraduate professor, - One from an additional recommender of your choice (not the same as the two above). Note: Recommendations from family members, relatives, or current students are not acceptable. 6. A letter of acceptance from a U.S. dental school accredited by ADA/CODA. 7. A completed Photo and Video Release Form. Submit all materials by the May 31 deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
