Betty Medearis Memorial Scholarships

Introduction
The Elgin Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will award two undergraduate scholarships of $1,000 each for the 2026–2027 academic year: the Betty Medearis Memorial Scholarship and the Elgin Legacy/Memorial Scholarship(s). At least one scholarship will be awarded to a woman of color.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be 19 years old by April 1, 2026.
- Identify as female.
- Have completed at least 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) of college credit with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Reside within a 50-mile radius of Elgin; preference will be given to applicants from the Elgin area.
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited institution or seeking enrollment for the upcoming semester.
Application and Deadlines
- Applications will be available on or before January 6, 2026.
- Paper applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2026.
- Email submissions must be received by the scholarship committee no later than April 4, 2026.

Award Details
Recipients will receive a student-affiliate membership in the Elgin Area Branch of AAUW and are invited to participate in branch meetings and activities. Scholarship winners are expected, if possible, to attend AAUW’s May dinner meeting when the awards will be presented. Scholarship funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s chosen college and applied to her tuition account.
